My wife and I stayed on a “Secret Escape” two night break. We had some difficulty finding the place, thanks to the Secret Escapes people not sending us an email they should have done. Ashley House is not yet well known to the local people, however the man at the Information Centre, which is only a few doors away, was able to point us in the right direction. The property is right on one of the main streets, set back some way behind iron gates and flanked by other houses set sideways on. At night several security lights come on as you walk along illuminating your way. The car park is at the back of the accessed by driving around what is more or less a small block, but take care because the rear gate is easy to miss. You then need to contact the owners to let you in, either by phone or sending someone round to the front on foot. Once in you walk through a very nice garden passing the chickens, whose eggs you will be eating for breakfast. The house itself has undergone a beautiful makeover which is a great credit to your hosts. Note too the remarkable photographs adorning the walls everywhere and copies are available from the man who took them. The bedrooms again are quite lovely and the breakfasts, made from local produce, top everything off and include wonderful home made jams.
Dinner could not be more convenient from either of the two establishments just over the road: Stumbles Restaurant and The George Hotel, both are good, the former particularly so and the latter will give you a 10% discount for being a guest at Ashley House
